Planetary Gears

planetary gear is a gear system that consists of mutiple outer gears, or planet gears, revolving around a central, or sun gear. Usually the planet gears are on a  carrier which may rotate in relation to the sun gear. transmission gearing systems may use an outer ring gear or hub assy, which meshes with the planet gears. The number one cause of this type of transmission failure is due to poor lubrication, other causes can be transmission leaks, low fluid, lack of maintence.

Below is an example of a broken planetary gear. This is a relatively common problem.
